December 2017

CHURCH EVENT : Cathedral Quarter Advent Wreath Festival

The festival has been held in St Mary Magdalene's Church, Bailgate for the past 12/13 years and has grown year on year. It began as the Bailgate Guild Christmas Tree Festival when 40 real trees were displayed in the church and decorated by members of the Bailgate Guild Traders' Association. It proved very popular with visitors and the local community but was very difficult to erect and dismantle, occupied half of the nave and could only remain on display for a few days. Barbara Wellman then came up with the inspired idea of using wreaths instead of trees. This enabled more businesses to be represented and also meant that that they could remain in position throughout the busy Christmas Market and longer so that more visitors could see them.

The Church will be open over the Festival as follows:
Weekdays from 10:30am to 11:30am;
Extra opening Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd Dec: 2:00pm - 4:00pm;
Open over the Christmas Market period from 12 noon - 6:00pm daily (5:30pm close on Sunday).

COMMUNITY EVENT : The Lincoln Waites' Christmas Procession with the Lincoln Gild of Freemen

Five local musicians are keeping a 600 year old tradition alive in Lincoln. In the 1480s, Christmas was an uncomfortable union of religious worship with illicit gambling and a great deal of alcohol! Every year on St Thomas Day, the Mayor's Band of Musicians - City of Lincoln Waites - proclaim the start of Christmas. "This has been our duty and privilege since before 1480", said Al Garrod, Master of the Waites. The Waites invite you to join them in the procession or meet them along the way. The Event starts at Newport Arch at 6pm on 21st December 2017, with the procession winding it's way down the hill to end at the Guildhall/Stonebow. The Waites will be "Crying" the unique Lincoln Christmas Proclamation at several points along the way.

This year, The Lincoln Gild of Freemen will walk with the Waites and conduct a charity collection for the Mayor's Charity - Food Banks.

6.20pm - Castle Square
6.30pm - The Harlequin
